  • (2011) Lifelong Learning - The universities of the third age and their contribution to happiness and quality of life: the case of the discipline of English

Learning throughout life is the subject of this study, which highlights people in the age groups over 50 years, studying English at three Senior / Third Age Universities in Portugal. These women and men, who are part of a growing group of unemployed and / or retired people, are in a new phase of their lives - free of work obligations and with a life expectancy greater than that of previous generations. They develop cultural potential, meet needs for intellectual knowledge and face new challenges - thus refusing inertia and combating stereotypes associated with old age. Having life goals, realising dreams and planning ahead are crucial for the fulfilment of individuals. Learning in later life, including learning English, alters behaviour and gives meaning to existence of these older people at the same time as contributing to their happiness and improving their quality of life. The pleasure they feel because they can satisfy the desire to communicate in English, motivation, proof that it is possible to learn a second language after 50 years and the benefits of brain stimulation for mental health are among other aspects discussed and commented in this project.
